Essentially, it is a communications protocol for signalling and controlling multimedia communication sessions. The most common applications of SIP are in Internet telephony for voice and video calls over IP networks. A single SIP Trunk line enables scaling of up to 1500 voice channels, as opposed to up to 30 channels on traditional PRI (Primary Rate Interface), lines.
The traditional way
Previously, all business calls went over PSTN on physical wire lines. Businesses used to purchase ‘trunks,’ or dedicated voice lines from their service providers. SIP Trunk lines replace these old-style physical PSTN lines, enabling point-to-point connectivity over the internet.
While many enterprises are already enabled with connectivity over the internet with VoIP, they use it mostly for enterprise LAN, as a one-to-one replacement for traditional wire line voice connectivity. To use it outside the LAN, a PSTN gateway is required. SIP Trunk takes the idea of VoIP a step further, by enabling cost-effective communication outside the corporate LAN.
We are proud to be recognised by the Voice & Data Telecom Leadership Forum 2016 for SIP 3G, an innovative and scaled down version of PSTN SIP Trunk services for SMEs. It establishes 3G connectivity over the last mile, against standard leased media which is commonly used. The award is for the year 2015-16, and was received by our Senior Leadership Team at a gala event in New Delhi last month.

A Game Changer in Enterprise Connectivity
SIP Trunk uses the same IP infrastructure to transmit both voice and data. The benefits compared to the older forms of telephone technology are huge. Conventional PSTN lines limit the number of calls possible to the number of channels that are available at the time. On a SIP Trunk line, as many as 1500 voice sessions can be carried over a single line simultaneously, making the sheer scale of channels unprecedented – the limits are set based on bandwidth and not on number of channels available. In effect, by increasing bandwidth, the number of calls that are possible also increases.
